My original intent of this article was about crafting your elevator pitch in 60 seconds or less. However, the direction and intent of my article quickly changed to Ditch the pitch and tell your story.
Elevator Speeches can be uninspiring and generally ineffective. How many elevator pitches do you remember? Can you tell me about the last 3 elevator speeches you heard? I am willing to bet your answer is NO. What if I asked you to tell me about the last 3 movies you saw? Could you do this? Sure you could, WHY? Movies are stories, and as viewers we can emotionally connect to those stories of delight, excitement, astonishment, suspense and inspiration. What if you could craft a story that would create an emotional connection to your listener that was memorable? Imagine, Telling your unique story which is far more interesting than telling who you are, what you do and what kind of service or product you can offer your listener.
To Transform your listeners through the power of story… Begin by creating a Story Arsenal. Grab a notepad and pencil. Take some time to reflect and document the following:
The top 3 highlights of your career.
The top 3 not so great highlights of your career
Stories of vulnerability
Stories of lessons learned
Think about your funniest moments, happiest moments, moments you questioned yourself
Your moments of impact.
What is the most interesting item you have ever sold or acquired
What is your passion
Why you do what you do
You might discover that you do not know your story as well as you thought you did. These stories can define us, move us and persuade us. As you reflect on some of your life journey stories you may learn something about yourself and your habits.
You have an important message you want people to know about you, turn your message into a story that sells and then practice your delivery. The more interesting, unique and outrageous your story is, the more you will capture your listeners attention and peak their interest. Imagine gaining that special edge, being more memorable, and acquiring that personal connection to move people in your direction all through the power of your meaningful story. Your listener may follow you right off the elevator to hear the Rest of the Story.
